TEXT-Fitch release on Eni Spa

Fitch notes that the project is likely to benefit from a strengthening of relationships and the sharing of greater responsibilities with its host country. State intervention in the oil and gas sector has become more frequent in the current high oil price environment, especially in countries where economies rely heavily on royalties and /or taxes and dividends from oil and gas companies.

Although the agreement may have a financial impact on the Kashagan project economics, it is difficult to assess the magnitude of it at this stage as the compensation payment structure is linked to oil prices at the start of commercial operations. Additionally, the project was originally conceived in a much lower oil price environment, so any adjustments to the project economics may well be compensated for by a higher price environment.

Corey's story: fair game or camera fodder?

Take off your sunglasses and apologise," she demanded.

He said he would apologise but he wasn't taking off his sunglasses and this then became the substance of the interview. Is this really what current affairs news has turned into? It would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

McKinnon's dismissive sign-off at the end "I suggest you go home and take a long, hard look at yourself", prompted nothing more than a smart-arse kid retort which has made him legendary among youth worldwide: "I have... everyone has... they love it."

Media savvy

Love him or hate him, this kid seemed extremely media savvy. His interview with McKinnon was posted on YouTube, his MySpace site had thousands of hits and news organisations and bloggers around the globe were obsessed with the story.

Granholm backs Cobo expansion

She said the proposed 120,000 square-foot expansion shows the region is fighting other states to retain the North American International Auto Show, an economic juggernaut held at Cobo that generates almost $600 million a year for the local economy.

"We must have it stay in the city from here on out," Granholm said. "We will fight to keep it."

The plan faces legislative hurdles, tax extensions and approval of several financial transactions in order to work. Barring roadblocks, construction could be finished and Cobo ready for the 2011 auto show, Assistant Wayne County Executive Matthew Schenk said.

The one key player missing from Thursday's unveiling was long-time skeptic L. Brooks Patterson, the Oakland County executive who has offered rival expansion plans and questioned expenses and tax spending.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

Hi everybody. I'm back from really slacking off from the blog over the holidays. This week, it's just a few random thoughts.

How many people are sick at your home, office or school? Seems like everyone in this newsroom is fighting some sort of bug right now. My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk.

Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played.

Kansas vs. Virginia Tech

So you can point to our schedule, but we play in the Big 12. That's a damn good conference."

Add in the intrigue of a great Kansas offense facing a great Virginia Tech defense, and this might have makings of a classic.

"They're a solid football team and very well-coached and talented," Beamer said. "They've got all the ingredients."

Kansas' recipe starts with the nation's highest-scoring offense.

Hawaii held that distinction until managing only 10 points against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, so now the Jayhawks - with their 44.3 points-per-game average - are in the top spot, and some of the stats they've put up this year are ridiculous.

Consider this, for starters: Kansas has 64 offensive touchdowns this year, against only 46 punts.

La-La Land of the Giants

I should have listened to my wife. She told me to wash my car. But I'd been on the road just about every weekend for three months, covering NFL games, and a carwash didn't register on my list of priorities.

So the other day I wheezed up to the Beverly Hills Hotel in my one-headlight Volvo that's covered in dust and bird droppings, and filled with old newspapers, water bottles, my son's basketball, and -- disturbingly -- my daughter's collection of stripped-bare Barbie dolls.
