| Couric mocks Rather in pre-broadcast taping
Though battles between news anchors have historically been between rival networks, today's ripest feud is a purely CBS affair: Katie vs. Dan.The rivalry took a humorous turn Thursday when a video was posted on the Web showing Katie Couric mocking Dan Rather while preparing to anchor a broadcast from Nashville, Tenn., last week.While her CBS crew prepared for the Nov. 8 evening broadcast and makeup was applied to her, Couric mocked Rather. A video of Rather surfaced last month, showing the former "CBS Evening News" anchor obsessing over his appearance before a remote broadcast - particularly questioning the wearing of an overcoat."I'm going to be like Dan Rather on YouTube," joked Couric, alluding to Rather by fiddling with her coat. "Geez, don't you think he deserves a little payback?"She then added, laughing: "This tart is ready to go!"Rather, who left CBS News in March 2005, in June referred to his successor as "a nice person," but said "the mistake was to try to bring the `Today' show ethos to the 'Evening News,' and to dumb it down, tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience."The video of Couric (http://tinyurl.com/2w6y6a) was posted by comedian Harry Shearer on MyDamnChannel.com, a video Web site co-founded by Shearer.Letterman edges Leno in rerun battleIn the final count, the first week of the writers strike helped ABC's "Nightline" gain viewers but not enough to pull past its late-night competition.But even in repeats, NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" had more eyeballs - 3.87 million viewers and 3.96 million viewers, respectively.The big news: The perennially second-place Letterman beat Leno, who fell from a season average of nearly 5 million viewers.

This is my entry for JD'S Great Blog Crossover Challenge II. As some of you already know, I am an Ohio State Buckeye fan who resides in the Heart of Texas among some of the most die hard and passionate fans in this country...Texas Longhorn fans! The College football fan base in general is the most interesting group of sports fans to observe. In my opinion they are more colorful and crazed than any Professional Football, Baseball, Basketball, or Hockey fan base and the Texas Longhorn fan is indeed an interesting breed. The University of Texas is located in the great city of Austin. One of the coolest cities in the United States. Known for it's hospitable atmosphere and great night life. It has been called the "Live Music Capitol of the World" and I've have found that to be true. But on Saturdays in the fall it's all about the Longhorns.
Giuliani's work for drug maker probed
Brownlee found himself on the telephone last year with a political and legal superstar, Rudolph W. Giuliani. For years, Mr. Brownlee and his small team had been building a case that the maker of the painkiller OxyContin had misled the public when it claimed the drug was less prone to abuse than competing narcotics. The drug was believed to be a factor in hundreds of deaths involving its abuse. .

PASSPORTS: No final word yet on when U.S. citizens will need a passport or an as-yet-to-be-created alternative for land and sea border crossings involving Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. But the State Department is preparing now.
As early as next month, department officials will begin accepting applications for a "passport card" that is cheaper and smaller than a passport and good only in the circumstances noted above. The limited-use card, which lasts 10 years, will cost $45 for adults ($25 of that will be waived if you already have a passport, including one up for renewal). Children 16 and younger pay $35 for a five-year card.
And, a reminder: As of Jan. 31, to cross the U.S. border by land or sea into Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean (except for Puerto Rico and the U.S.

First, the illusion of control. Obviously some coaches are better than others I'd certainly rather be coached by Pete Carroll than Nick Saban. (More on Saban below.) But as sports become ever-more important and ever-more analyzed, there seems an increasing tendency to want to believe that everything on the field happens for a reason. The ball didn't just bounce into some guy's hands, good coaching put the guy into the right position. The receiver didn't just run fast and get open, hours of round-the-clock study enabled the coach to determine precisely what pass pattern to call. It wasn't that the Colts played well Saturday while the Chiefs had an off day, this happened because Tony Dungy did an astonishingly good job of preparing his team using subtle psychological tools plus mega-brilliant game planning, while Herman Edwards did a poor job of preparing his team.
Prison worker took drugs into jail
She was stopped and searched on October 23, 2006, when a sniffer dog showed an interest in the bag she was carrying. Heroin and cannabis with an estimated value of £21,000 was found inside a coffee jar. The court was told that rumours about Powell’s relationship with an inmate were circulating in the prison. She said she took the drugs into the jail because she had received a letter threatening exposure. Simon Drew, for the defence, said that Powell was full of remorse and shame for "this single incident". .
